Jalapeño-Spiked Bourbon Julep
This recipe from Chef Edward Lee of Magnolia 610 in Louisville, Kentucky, is a deliciously spicy take on the classic Julep.
• 2.5 oz Bourbon
• 1 oz jalapeño simple syrup (see recipe below)
• 4-6 mint leaves
• Splash of soda water
• Thin slice of jalapeño and a mint sprig for garnish
In a julep tin or rocks glass, add mint leaves and jalapeño simple syrup. Gently press mint leaves with a muddler to release their oils. Add enough crushed ice to fill the glass two-thirds of the way full. Pour Bourbon over top and stir gently to mix. Fill with more crushed ice to form a mound over top. Top with a splash of soda and garnish with a slice of jalapeño and a mint sprig. Enjoy!
Jalapeño simple syrup recipe
In a saucepan combine 1 cup sugar, 1 cup water, and two chopped jalapeño peppers. Bring to a boil and stir to dissolve sugar. Once sugar is dissolved, turn off the heat and let steep for 20 minutes. Let the syrup cool, then strain into a mason jar and keep refrigerated until ready to use. Will keep for two weeks or so.
