Choosing the Right Cocktail Shaker

Picking a cocktail shaker comes down to how you actually shake. The Boston shaker is the two-piece, professional-grade choice — it seals tight for a vigorous shake, holds more ice, and is what most working bartenders reach for (you’ll need a separate strainer alongside it). The New York and Deco shaker styles build the strainer right into the lid, so there’s nothing extra to manage — a solid entry point if you’re shaking at home for the first time. For something in between, the Montpellier and Venetian shakers skip the built-in strainer but keep a tight Boston-style seal, with a narrower profile that’s easier to handle one-handed.
