From the province of Veneto, Poli Marconi 42 Gin comes from a fusion of herbs, berries and spices from the Mediterranean Sea. Fifth & Vermouth reviews the Poli Marconi 42 Gin and how it can be used to create amazing gin cocktails.
While the explosion in popularity of craft gin has enticed a lot of new players to the game, the Poli family are anything but rookies when it comes to distilling. The Poli distillery is located in the town of Schiavon, which is nestled in the Italian province of Veneto. The distillery was founded in 1898 and over the last century they have built up a reputation as one of the top producers of artisanal Grappa in the world. Today, the current generation running the Poli distillery has branched out, adding several complementary products to their line-up including among other things a set of excellent gins.
The first thing you will notice about the Marconi 42 gin is the striking bottle, which features a tinted azure blue bottle adorned with a thin and delicate neck that is a trademark of Poli’s style. While looks may not be everything, in this case, they certainly don’t hurt as this bottle would be eye-catching on any retail shelf or back bar. Poli positions this as a “Mediterranean style” gin with the distillery making the romantic pronouncement that “If you bring the glass close to your ear, you can hear crickets and cicadas…”. While that might be just a tad dramatic, once this lovely gin is in your glass the aromatics speak for themselves. Poli uses a selection of botanicals to create the Marconi 42 which include juniper, rosemary, mint, basil, thyme, cardamom, and coriander – a combination that certainly promises to be a sensory delight!
In the glass, the symphony of fresh herbs comes to the forefront with rosemary and sage taking center stage. On the palate, this is crisp and refreshing with a burst of fresh spearmint providing a cooling touch while the wild herbs continue to delight. While this is a complex gin, it still retains an elegance that keeps the bold ingredients from overpowering. Each component nicely compliments the next, creating a balance that allows this gin to stand up all on its own over ice or that makes it a great option for a premium cocktail.
While the Poli Marconi 42 gin carries a premium price tag for a premium product. In Alberta for around $70, it delivers the goods with style and premium quality to match the packaging. The Marconi 42 Gin is excellent served over a large ice cube with a twist of lemon in a rocks glass and sipped slowly, and it also makes an excellent option for cocktails including a classic Martini, Negroni, or Vesper to name a few. If you see a bottle at your local liquor store or on the back bar at your favorite cocktail spot, we highly recommend giving it a try!
