Today’s industry highlight is focused on Makina Labrecque, a bartender, consultant, and beverage specialist living in Calgary, AB. Formerly from Hinton, AB, Makina’s first passion was not the bar scene, but as an Irish dancer who performed on tours. In 2011, Makina decided to call Calgary her new home. Her passion for cocktailing and creating memorable experiences has been an integral part of local Calgary businesses such as Proof Cocktail Bar, and Ricardo’s Hideaway.

Makina is passionate about great spirits, so it’s only natural given her extensive background in cocktail creation and bartending that she accepted a role with Diageo as Reserve Portfolio Ambassador. Over the past two years in that role, Makina has educated the Calgary hospitality community and collaborated on events featuring the world’s most iconic spirit brands such as Johnnie Walker Blended Scotch Whisky, Don Julio Tequila, Tanqueray Gin, and Ketel One Vodka.

According to Feverish News’ article on Makina, Makina’s love for making drinks comes from the fact that she believes she can change anyone’s mind about what they like and do not like when it comes to different spirits. She states that the best time to become a bartender is now. She is an advocate for cocktail competitions as they can be life-changing. She backs this up further by noting her success in the Patrón Perfectionists competitions in 2017 and 2018.

Sweater Weather – By Makina Labrecque

Ingredients:

1.5 oz. Ciroc Coconut Vodka
0.25 oz. Cointreau
0.25 oz. Campari
1 oz. Cloudy apple juice
0.25 oz. Lemon juice
1 Rosemary Sprig

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker. Lightly muddle rosemary sprig to release its flavors and aromas. Add ice and shake vigorously for ten seconds. Fine strain over a fresh large ice cube.  Garnish with a flamed star anise pod. Enjoy!
